چکیده

Degradation of optical components in space is a problem affecting many remote sensing instruments. In the Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment (GOME) on board ERS-2, the light backscattered by the Earth’s atmosphere follows a different optical path through the spectrometer than solar irradiance. GOME has been therefore designed to monitor degradation of performance not only for the solar irradiance observation mode, but also for Moon radiance, which is occasionally measured. The performance of GOME for Earth albedo measurements, i.e. the observation mode necessary for the measurement of trace gases, is however not straightforward. This is caused by the difficulty of defining a stable calibration target: a first approach for wavelengths 295 nm is presented in [1]. Following that approach, the degradation of Earth albedos is here analyzed over the five years of GOME operations.

Surface Uv-flux Estimation from Gome : Impact of Wavelength Dependent Effective Albedo

The surface albedo is the ratio between the upward irradiance, reflected from the ground, and the downward irradiance. It is an important parameter in the climate system, since it determines to a large extent the Earth radiation budget. The ground albedo often refers to the average reflectivity over the whole wavelength range of solar radiation. Investigation of the surface influence on radiati...

Validation of GOME polarization measurements by method of limiting atmospheres

[1] A method is presented for validation of space-based polarization measurements. The method is based on a determination of limits in the (fractional) polarization of reflected solar light as measured by the GOME instrument. These empirical limits were used to study the instrument performance during the first 5.5 years of GOME operation (1996–2001), which revealed a wavelength and viewing angl...

Absolute Calibration and Degradation of Sciamachy/gome Reflectances

The goal of this study is to develop a method to quantify SCIAMACHY degradation and calibration in the UV, where the focus is on the O3 profile wavelength range 270-330 nm. Awaiting SCIAMACHY data reprocessing, the method has been performed on GOME observations, SCIAMACHY predecessor. The approach followed is to compare GOME reflectivity spectra with simulated spectra using collocated independe...

A fast H2O total column density product from GOME – Validation with in-situ aircraft measurements

Atmospheric water vapour is the most important greenhouse gas which is responsible for about 2/3 of the natural greenhouse effect, therefore changes in atmospheric water vapour in a changing climate (the water vapour feedback) is subject to intense debate. H2O is also involved in many important reaction cycles of atmospheric chemistry, e.g. in the production of the OH radical. Thus, long time s...

Comparison of Operational Cloud Properties Derived from Gome/ers-2 and Msg/seviri Data

We focus on the retrieval of cloud properties appropriate for trace gas retrieval from sun-normalized UV/VIS backscatter spectra obtained from the Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment (GOME) on-board ERS-2. A data fusion technique is applied to calculate the fractional cloud cover of GOME footprints from GOME’s Polarization Measurement Devices (PMDs). Furthermore, cloudtop albedo and cloud-top he...
